By David Bachman”I don’t like cats, but I like painting,” explains William Painter, a man whose work has been exhibited at the New York Academy of Sciences and other prestigious institutions.
The painter’s love of cats, he says, is a side effect of his background in sculpture, a field in which he spent years working with animals.
He was a pet cat, a cat for the most part.
“I think I have to be the one to tell them they’re not to be used for furniture, for example, or used for toys, or anything,” Painter says.
Painter has always had an appreciation for animals and the natural world, which made him want to study animal behavior.
“I like animals and their behavior,” he says.
“They’re interesting to study.
They’re very interesting to observe.
They are an important part of our lives, not just as humans, but also as animals, for me.
And I want to share that with the world.”
While painting with cats, Painter realized that he had an affinity for the animal world.
“A cat is like a piece of paper, like a painting, a painting that you can hold in your hand,” he explains.
“You can have a whole world, a whole collection of paintings, of animals, of plants, of all sorts of things.
So I have a natural affinity for animals.”
He was fascinated by the idea of using a cat to create a work of art.
“The idea of me painting a cat is just really a way of me drawing attention to this idea of an animal being used as a canvas,” he said.
Painters pet was a small, brown, fluffy black-and-white kitty.
It came with a book of drawings that he wrote himself.
The art-historical perspective on animalsPainter began painting cats with the help of his friend and colleague, art historian and curator at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Prof. Avi Rosen, and his wife, a painter known for her work with animals and wildlife.
“She wanted to find out how animals react to different conditions and she wanted to see how animals respond to the same things,” Painter explains.
Painting with cats helped him understand why animals react in a particular way to different things, including the ways in which they respond to people, and in what ways they respond in different situations.
“If I have an animal I want it to do, I know that it is going to be attracted to the things that are on my canvas,” Painter said.
I can make them look really nice and beautiful. “
When I look at cats, I think that they’re like a kind of canvas.
I can make them look really nice and beautiful.
I want them to have this kind of natural appeal.”
Painter was not alone in wanting to create works of art with animals in mind.
“There were artists that wanted to paint with animals, but it was a very small percentage of the work that was done in that field,” Rosen says.
Painting cats with paintings is one way of exploring that question.”
I have an idea of the way that animals feel, and I think there are ways of making art with them.”
Painting cats with paintings is one way of exploring that question.
Painers work, he said, is an experience that he hopes his children, now grown, will experience.
“As a child I always wanted to create art with cats and other animals, and to see the work I have made with animals is a great experience for them,” he concludes.
“That is something that I think will be in the future.”
